About our school
Blackwell Primary School is a friendly, energetic and forward-thinking community primary school based in the village of Blackwell, Derbyshire.
We have 120 places in school across four classes, with a mixed year group arrangement. Our nursery operates in the mornings and shares space with our reception class as a full Early Years Foundation Stage unit.
The school serves a catchment area incorporating the village of Blackwell, near Alfreton. School also welcomes pupils from outside our immediate catchment area, including the nearby towns and villages of South Normanton, Westhouses and Tibshelf.
Blackwell Primary opened in 1871 and has a long established history at the centre of our local community. Whole generations of families have attended our school and added to our rich heritage. In 1992 the school was expanded with the addition of the nursery, and in 2017 acquired the old Children's Centre building to use as a dedicated area for nurture, school clubs and our breakfast and afterschool club provision. The school itself consists of classrooms, a library, a hall, STEM room, on-site kitchen and a number of intervention areas.
Our outdoor provision is extensive and provides many opportunities for outdoor learning. We have a multi-use games area (MUGA) to enjoy sports throughout the year, in addition to our large playground and full sized playing field. Our gardening space continues to develop with a shed, growing beds and sensory garden. We also have opportunities to study wildlife by means of our school pond and wildlife watching den.
OFSTED
The school was last inspected in July 2021 and judged to be good in all areas.
Ofsted recognised that "Blackwell is an inclusive school where everyone is valued" and that all the children have "positive attitudes to learning".

Safeguarding is given the highest priority at Blackwell. There may be times when adults are concerned about children in our community. Please don't ignore concerns; child protection is everyone's responsibility.
