School Meals
At Blackwell, school meals are provided by Derbyshire County Council Catering Services. All our meals are freshly prepared on site in our new purpose-built kitchen.
Derbyshire County Council has put a great deal of time, effort and money into creating healthy menus and promoting healthy choices to pupils.
Menus are run on a four weekly cycle and include vegetarian options. If your child has any special dietary requirements then please let the school office or your child's teacher know. All menus meet the current government nutritional standards.
The current price for a school dinner is £3.25 per day. Children eligible and registered for Free School Meals or those covered by the Universal Infant Free School Meals scheme (Reception - Year 2) are entitled to a free school meal.
Please note that sometimes our cooks sometimes have to make menu changes at short notice (for instance if there is a problem with food deliveries) but we aim to keep this to a minimum.
Free School Meals
Could your child be eligible for Free School Meals?
A lot of people don't claim free school meals even though they're entitled. Derbyshire County Council has launched a campaign to encourage people to check if they're eligible.
You don't need to worry about other children knowing your child gets free school meals. Only the school and catering staff will know.
You could save £400 a year for each child and your children could benefit from a good hot meal at lunchtime. The school will benefit too − they'll get the pupil premium of £1,300 a year from the government for each child on free school meals.
Your child may be able to get free school meals if you (or the young person themselves, where appropriate) get any of the following:
INCOME SUPPORT
INCOME-BASED JOBSEEKER'S ALLOWANCE
INCOME-RELATED EMPLOYMENT AND SUPPORT ALLOWANCE
SUPPORT UNDER PART VI OF THE IMMIGRATION AND ASYLUM ACT 1999
THE GUARANTEE ELEMENT OF STATE PENSION CREDIT
CHILD TAX CREDIT (PROVIDED YOU'RE NOT ALSO ENTITLED TO WORKING TAX CREDIT* AND HAVE AN ANNUAL GROSS INCOME OF NO MORE THAN £16,190)
UNIVERSAL CREDIT** (MORE DETAILS ON UNIVERSAL CREDIT AND ELIGIBILITY ARE AVAILABLE FROM DERBYSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL)
Young people age 16-18 who receive the above benefits or Tax Credits in their own right are also entitled to receive free school meals. You will not be eligible if you are claiming Working Tax Credit.
